Logging, fires, disease and acid rain have devastated Southern Appalachia's spruce-fir forests, an iconic ecosystem left by the last ice age. A group in Lake Toxaway is helping to restore it.

Southern Highland Reserve is an example of what can be done with a vision toward preservation. A beautiful place that allows you to take a breath and “feel” the forest, brush shoulders with Mother Nature, and leave nourished.
