Now that I'm 65 (in a few days) I wondered why we have to travel across our beleaguered globe to tick off items on our bucket lists. Some of the best destinations are right here.
So good of you to give credit to those who make this area so special. I am one who also believes in retiring is place. As soon as I can I will be in Sherwood Forest, hopefully giving back and enjoying the area.
I am reminded of my mother’s meditation on travel and her quote of William Hazlitt. “I should like well enough to spend the whole of my life traveling abroad if I could anywhere borrow another life to spend afterwards at home.”
I love this post, Dan, and resonate with everything you said about the value and wisdom of retiring-in-place. Jim and I retired here, to the Jocassee Gorges and Blue Wall area of South Carolina (welcome to my native land!), for precisely the reason you mention: so we wouldn't have to go wandering all over the place, seeking beauty and inspiration. We have it right here where we live. We spent a lot of our retirement $ on the house we built, knowing that we wouldn't be spending $ on a Viking river cruise in Germany or jetting off to Italy to join the hordes of tourists there. We're happy here and, like you and your son, love hitting the breathtaking trails in our own backyard. Thanks for expressing all this in your post, and happy retirement age to you!
Reflection of great experiences is contagious. Your narrative of the Foothills trail hike is vivid and makes me want to do it before I turn 75!!!

Nice work, as usual. You captured the essence of the area in a succinct fashion.

Beautiful, Sue. You of the miniscule carbon footprint
Just reading about your hike is worth every penny of the subscription- thank you for pointing out the jewel right out of your back door, literally 👏
Thanks, Andy. Hope to see you up here soon.
