I cycled the famous trails linking Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. to learn what the future Ecusta Trail might bring to Brevard. Spoiler: Trails are about much more than economic investment.
Thanks for this great article Dan. We have these types of trails all throughout our great nation, they are an incredible asset to each regional community. One in particular that I like is the bike trail from Kansas City all the way across Missouri to St. Louis. People stop at B&B's along the way, and relish the beauty of the Missouri River Valley, all while keeping safe from auto traffic on the road.
Really enjoyed everything about this article. Your writing just draws me in. I’m ready to ride it! And such insightful information about how these trail systems add so much to community and connection. Thanks Dan!
Love your descriptions of your journey. The benefits of the trail will be many, but the locals stand to benefit the most . Thank you for another great story; only wish I could have ridden along with you
Thank you Dan for such a visual ride on the path linking Pittsburgh and DC. Especially I appreciate your honest views of the building and use of the Ecusta Trail. I came from the Atlanta area, specifically Cobb county where the bike/walking trail Silver Comet began in Smyrna Ga. I biked it numerous times, always enjoying nature in an otherwise busy environment. It was such a valuable vision, even years ago. Though I’m not as able to bike long distances now, knowing what a valuable and enjoyable experience the Ecusta Trail can be for everyone is great. I’m hopeful that those who’s land borders the trail or will now have a trail pass across their land will be able to ease their concerns and welcome such an amazing opportunity to see their communities benefit from its’ creation and use.
This was a wonderful story. It was almost like you were there riding along with you. I agree on Frostburg. I think it is a wonderful town and is a great place to live. I’m glad you’re here in Brevard and writing great articles!
This passage made me laugh: ‘Aren’t they afraid of crime? I asked, repeating a concern raised by some residents who live near the path of the Ecusta.
He paused, looking puzzled, before saying, “That’s absurd.”’
