Once the source of community pride and even "love," the hospital has suffered declining service and skyrocketing prices blamed on the "obscene" influence of profit-seeking.
Phenomenal coverage of this debacle. I had two stays in that hospital. My dogs were actually allowed to spend the night with me (Mission days), and I can't explain how much that helped me. The dogs even visited other patients, and helped them. I feel like if I had to go there now, I wouldn't even give them my name. I'd just take whatever care they offered (not much these days), and not even pay the bill. This article basically went into detail everything I've been speculating about the changes. Please tell me if this is all facts.
Our hospital needs services to meet the needs of the community without the necessary travel to Asheville. Since moving here 3 years ago our hospital has provided excellent care in the ED but transferring to Asheville is a hardship.
Reading this reminds me how important good journalism is and how important education is…to understand it. Thanks for your hard work and faithful service.
Outstanding summation of the role Mission’s executive ‘leadership’ played in orchestrating the tragedy.
this is excellent
No one has also mentioned of the all staff forced out, or the ones that also took hits from their pay cuts of shift pay.
Love to hear about it. # is 352-584-1391
In light of this sad history, I would welcome a single-payer system that would not incentivize profit over patient care.
Thanks for the well researched and in-depth coverage Dan.
Thanks, Beth. Hope you're back on the bike soon.

Thanks, Katt. It's all the facts I could gather with lack of transparency from HCA.
I used to work for the hospital. When the birthing center closed, I made a Facebook post critical of the decision.
The next day I was threatened with immediate dismissal if I opened my mouth about it again.
Sad state of affairs for the community
The loss of the Labor & Delivery dept was a tragedy. We are now in a maternal care desert.
