A Brevard resident's wildflower garden is part of a growing movement to convert portions of sterile lawns into the thriving home of pollinating insects and birds.
Love it. Vermont has now mow May to give bees and other insects a good start. Read Bicycling with Butterflies (Sara Dykman) to see the impact mowing flowers and tilling fields has on the Monarchs’ 10,000 miles journey from Mexico to Canada and back to Mexico which takes several generations in their metamorphosis.
Well done, Dan, on such an important topic. I live south of Brevard, just over the S.C. line, and we're doing the same thing in our yard, with hyperlocal wildflower seed collected in our own county. I love that you pointed out how Pisgah Health's "meadow" could be diversified and vastly improved by introducing wildflowers to the grasses.

Sounds very cool, Jeanne. Let me know how it comes out.
Hoorah for this!! Inspiring guy. Let’s all follow his example - every little garden makes a change for better.
Wonderful article, Dan! Thanks so much for drawing attention to Doug's project. Fingers crossed that others will follow his example.
I loved reading this article! Such an inspiration for all of us.
