County Manager Jaime Laughter recommended a 2.67 cent property tax increase to cover expenses including salary increases. Commissioners agreed to the raises but asked for other funding options.
We have an outstanding county manager who is focused on stabilizing the tax burden over a multi-year period instead if “juicing” the budget one year with one-time gimmicks. The “juicing” leads to property tax instability that can either result in a decline of services or horrendous increases in another year or two. In my opinion, the County Commissioners are derelict in their vision about increases wages by $2 million without a correlating revenue increase. County Commissioners are too focused on their public image instead of acting responsible to stabilize the community.
If the county is going to reappraisal property values then property owners will be automatically hit with a substantial increase. If they increase the rate also the increase will be compounded just like we got hit several years ago. In the 9 months I have lived here my taxes have almost doubled. At the same time our officials are clamoring about "affordable" housing. Raising appraised values and taxes will just deepen that gulf.
How about doing what they do in Florida? If you're not a resident of Florida and own property there, your property taxes are several times higher than if you're a resident of Florida.
This was addressed many times, and at this meeting too. This change has to come from legislation at Raleigh. Local Commissioners are powerless to change, except to lobby, which has been going on for some time. However, western and easternmost counties need this, but central counties could care less, because they are not affected like we are.
Sorry, the one thing nobody in this country needs is more taxes. This is simply confiscation of land from the poorer residents, and a burden on the very people hit worst by covid lockdowns .

Property values have ballooned the past year so they are already getting an increase in property taxes.
