Your article about short-term rentals in Brevard made no mention of proposed enforcement of this action. Are the people of Brevard really willing to forego $75M dollars in contributions to the local economy and damage to the tourist trade upon which Brevard depends? Short term rentals are a financial boom for towns like Brevard. Short term rentals have almost no impact on housing costs in this area. There are many more significant factors that are beyond the ability of local government to control. This proposal has been tried elsewhere and does not do what they think it will do. Have Asheville housing costs been reduced as a result? Has it increased the availability of low cost housing anywhere? This will be a huge negative impact on the fiscal health of Brevard and the tourism industry.

I agree. Tourism is the life blood of this town. Like it or not. Housing costs are supply and demand. It is moronic to think the city/county should try to control housing costs/rents/ etc. Do you think the original inhabitants of Hollywood got to stay there when the Stars moved in?

Sorry, I dygress. Yes, I agree :)

I think they are over-stepping their legal and moral boundaries. This turns into controlling peoples homes. Tourism is the life blood of this town, like it or not. It seems like they want to slit the wrist of the money coming in.

It is a short sighted recommendation that will bring law-suits toward the town.

This is essentially, not in in my neighborhood thinking, with you can, you can't ... who decides, pay-offs.

But people do have their own homes and neighborhoods here. You cant have a neighborhood of residents if half the homes are transits. Tourism may be a big money maker, but where do the restaurant owners etc and employees live? The reason people like to visit here is because of the people ultimately. The forest is nice, but if the mechanic cant repair your car till they tow it to Asheville, or the restaurant has to charge 30% gratuity for employees to be able live here . Or if we ever have a serious downturn in the economy to the point tourism falls . We must be well balanced to remain a sustainable, stable community. And we need jobs for the young generation that's something other than low paid service jobs to tourists. Planning is appropriate

If you think that tourism is not as important as long time residents to Brevard, you are wrong. I work in a thrift shop here and a large number of customers come in because they are walking the town while visiting from surrounding states. Look at the growth of fast food restaurants. Do you think locals eat there? How many locals are there on the streets of Brevard enjoying the local atmosphere? How many summer camps surround the town? The population of Brevard nearly doubles in summer. If you think restricting short term rentals will not have a negative impact, think again. Do you think forcing short-term renters into the surrounding counties will be as attractive to tourists visiting here as staying right in town where they don't need a car to enjoy the town. Restricting short term rentals is short sighted and suicidal for Brevard. Large national hotel chains will see the void and we will see a huge growth in major hotels (if the town survives and grows)...would that be better? Brevard should not follow the example of cities like Asheville. We need to stay a small touristy town where people feel safe and enjoy all we have to offer.

Planning is important, but you and I don't agree on most of what you said :) No harm, no foul.
